GROUP is a performance collaborative founded in 2002 by co-artistic directors Jason Torres Hancock and Oscar Manuel Trujillo. GROUP’s work investigates, reflects, and presents the lives and stories of Queer people of color. GROUP also focuses on the insider/outsider experience that women, people of color, immigrants, and LGBT people share in American culture today.
As an AIRspace Artist in Residence, GROUP has explored the impact of externalized and internalized oppression on the family. Specifically, how being different or unacceptable by societal and family norms affects one’s safety; how one is given support and love; and one’s ability to create safety and connection in adult life. The current work also investigates our patterns of resilience and people’s ability to survive and flourish in the face of trauma. Through music and song, text and silence, movement and theatricality, linear narrative and abstract performance GROUP will provide the audience with an intimate and intriguing portrayal of these personal experiences.
