an aerial dance
directed by Sonya Smith
AIRspace resident 2006
Sonya Smith and Courtney Moreno, part of the creative team that
created Groundbirds, that prompted the Bay Area Reporter to deem it
the “most powerful”performance of the 2004 Fresh Meat Performance
festival, return to refine their signature style of aerial partnering
in performance.
Amy Ray Kingwill and Catherine Murty complete the cast of this evening of delicious performances
finding flight in impossible spaces, relationships in curious combinations. The visceral quality of the work leads audiences to experience their own flying dreams.
Biographies
A former monkey-bar junkie, Sonya Smith discovered in college that dancing was much more entertaining than running around in circles jumping over little fences. Since then she has performed, produced and collaborated on work in Minneapolis, Portland, and San Francisco with Project Bandaloop, Kim Epifano, Dance Ceres, Eat Cake Productions, Lizz Roman and Dancers, Zaccho Dance Theater and Courtney Moreno and Christopher Love. A longtime resident at 848 Community Space, she continues that work as a member of the CounterPULSE Board of Directors.
Courtney Moreno has had the pleasure of working with Project Bandaloop, Jo Kreiter/ Flyaway Productions, and Rachael Lincoln, and is currently enjoying being a part of Lizz Roman & Dancers as well as her continued collaborations with Sonya Smith.
Catherine Murty is an overworked, underpaid lover of dance who likes to build things for Sonya to play on.
Amy “Ray” Kingwill comes originally from Jackson Hole, Wyoming and a life filled with visual and performing art. She holds a BFA in Modern Dance from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. She moved to San Francisco to pursue her career and a new beginning in 2002. Amy “Ray” has performed with rawfootage/Kelly Kemp, Epiphany Productions, Dance Ceres, Strong Current, Earth Circus Productions, Bibliodance, Tap Root, Kate Corby and Dancers, Vaude de Vire Society and recently started creating her own work again under the name of A.R.K Dance. She also spends much of her time with her administrative assisting business for artists, Working On It. She is very excited to dance with Sonya again.
